Since 1984 May is the month to raise awareness of allergies and asthma, including food allergies. With 100 million plus Americans having an allergy and/or asthma, this is the time to raise awareness of allergies and asthma and promote the importance of proper diagnosis, treatment and disease management.
Here are some quick facts about the state of allergies and asthma in the U.S.:
25 million plus Americans have asthma
30 million plus kids and adults have food allergies
81 million Americans have rhinitis from nasal allergies
There’s no cure for asthma and allergies
With so many adults and kids having an asthma or allergy diagnosis, or both, it’s likely you know someone with allergies and asthma. Maybe even you! I have lived with asthma and allergies for most of my life. I am diagnosed with food allergies, asthma and allergies.

The general public often does not understand the seriousness of asthma and allergies and the impact on those of us who have these diseases. And these are not separate diseases. They are all connected to one another. Often allergies can trigger an asthma flare. Asthma is a serious disease that can cause death when left untreated. Food allergies can also kill. And with no cure for these diseases it’s crucial to be aware of those suffering from these ailments.
All month I will highlight here at DairyFreeGina and on Instagram information about asthma and allergies. May 7, 2024 is World Asthma Day and Food Allergy Awareness is all month but especially highlighted during the week of May 12-18th.

Do you have allergies and/or asthma? What will you do to spread awareness in May and throughout the year? Please share in the comments section.
