The month of May is dedicated to raising awareness about asthma and allergies. The first Tuesday in May is World Asthma Day. For 2025 that day is May 7th. This year, the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) is focusing the day around the theme of “Make Inhaled Treatments Accessible for All.”

GINA emphasizes there is a need to ensure that people with asthma can access inhaled medications. These medications are essential both for controlling the underlying disease and treating attacks.

There is no cure for asthma, but asthma attacks can be prevented by using inhaled corticosteroid-containing medications. These inhalers treat the inflammation which causes asthma.

So Just What is Asthma?

Asthma is a chronic disease that causes airways to become inflamed and hard to breath. The inside walls of airways become sore, swollen and sensitive.

People with asthma have inflamed airways and are sensitive to things that don’t normally bother others . These triggers can include: smoking, air pollution, pollen , chemicals, dust, pet dander, strong fumes/odors , exercise, weather. In severe asthma attacks airways can close so much that vital organs don’t get enough oxygen. Death can occur from a severe asthma attack.

Make Asthma and Allergy Treatments Available to All

Asthma and allergies pose a significant cost burden to those with these conditions. Many of the deaths linked to asthma and allergies happen because the cost of medication is so high. Many of these deaths are preventable with access to medications.

In the U.S. more than 100 million people are affected by asthma and/or allergies. With a number that high chances are that’s you or someone you know and love. Now more than ever it’s important to advocate for those with asthma and allergies so that all can have access to needed medications.
