Joey’s Home Bakery is a dedicated gluten free bakery which also offers some vegan, paleo, keto and dairy free options. No preservatives, artificial ingredients, or high fructose corn syrup are used. The bakery also avoids using hydrogenated oil.
When I travel, I always search for eateries that cater to the food
allergy community so I was excited to try Joey’s, but unfortunately the bakery fell short of expectations, especially compared to other phenomenal bakeries I’ve visited. The bakery is large but somewhat cluttered.
Some of the dairy free and vegan items are in the same case as the other goodies but the bakery tries to keep separate by packaging those items containing dairy in separate containers.
I decided to try a blueberry scone since blueberries and scones are favorites of mine . The scone was small in size but loaded with blueberries. Unfortunately it tasted very bland, quite dry, and dense.
I saved most of it for my husband to try and he thought it lacked flavor and found the texture gritty and odd. Dean has no food allergies and is able to really discern flavors. Unfortunately, we ended up throwing most of it away.
Our cousin visited Joey’s earlier in the week we visited and bought some biscotti which he saved for us to try. He wasn’t sure if the biscotti were actually dairy free so I avoided sampling. Dean said the biscotti were somewhat more flavorful than the scone but not by much.
On the day I visited the breads looked tasty. The loaves are small and a bit pricey. After the experience with the scone I was hesitant to spend money on the bread.
Perhaps some of the other bakery items are better tasting than what we tried. If you visit Joey’s let us know what you sampled and your thoughts.
